Bestselling fantasy authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are releasing a new Dragonlance novel, War Wizard, on 4 August, marking a fresh addition to the series that began with Dragons of Autumn Twilight in 1984. The book is a prequel to the original Dragonlance Chronicles, and IGN has published an exclusive excerpt alongside the announcement, giving fans a first look ahead of publication.

War Wizard follows the early years of future legends Huma Dragonbane and Magius during the Third Dragon War, tracing their unlikely friendship as a knight-in-training and a persecuted young mage amid a Solamnian society hostile to magic users. The excerpt centres on a tense doppelganger encounter, with Weis explaining that the shapeshifting monsters make dangerous, magic-resistant assassins in the Dungeons & Dragons universe the novels are based on.
