A drought has been declared across all of Wales after sustained high temperatures and exceptionally low rainfall caused rivers, soils and habitats to deteriorate. Natural Resources Wales said the move reflects growing environmental damage, including dry riverbeds, distressed fish, algae growth, wildfire risk and pressure on farming and forestry, while prompting closer monitoring and stronger water-use advice.

Wales received only 8% of its usual July rainfall and is on course for its driest July in 190 years, with most rivers at exceptionally low levels and groundwater also falling. The declaration does not currently indicate a threat to household or business water supplies, as reservoirs remain relatively healthy after a wet start to the year, but NRW warned that limited rainfall and possible further heatwaves could worsen conditions.
