Lake Brenets, a popular scenic destination on the Swiss–French border, dried up during severe drought conditions in 2022. The disappearance of the lake’s water disrupted tourism and illustrated the wider effects of prolonged heat and low rainfall across Switzerland and Europe.

The lake, formed by the River Doubs in the Jura region, was effectively empty by August after water levels fell sharply. Boat services were suspended in July, while Switzerland recorded exceptionally low lake and river levels during an unusually warm, dry year.
