A new trailer has been released for "Dune: Part Three", the finale of Denis Villeneuve's film trilogy, and it again suggests the film will diverge notably from Frank Herbert's source novels. This matters because the adaptation is being closely watched by both mainstream filmgoers and devoted book fans, and the changes hint at how Villeneuve intends to conclude Paul Atreides' story on screen. The trailer indicates significant time has passed, with Paul ruling as Padishah Emperor after "conquering the galaxy" and "destroying thousands of worlds", while Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) and a new character played by Robert Pattinson plot "regime change" against him, with Zendaya's Chani seemingly involved.

The film is billed as the "epic conclusion", yet the primary source, "Dune Messiah", was not the end of Herbert's saga, so wrapping up Paul's tale will require changes, possibly folding in elements of "Children of Dune". Chani appears to have a larger role than in the novel, building on the Paul-Chani rift introduced in "Part Two". The trailer's description places the film "nearly two decades" after the previous instalment, against the book's 12-year gap, and shows more of Paul's Holy War than the novel depicts. Villeneuve and co-writer Brian K. Vaughan face the task of satisfying both audiences. "Dune: Part Three" reaches cinemas on 18 December, the same day as "Avengers: Doomsday".
