Explained simply
Jumanji began as a 1981 children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, in which a mysterious board game brings its dangers into the players’ lives. The story was adapted into a 1995 film starring Robin Williams, then reimagined in two later films as a video game that draws players into its world.
Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan star in the later films as people pulled into the game, each taking on an avatar with different abilities. The series has become a major cinema franchise, with its two most recent films together earning more than $1.7 billion worldwide.
