EA employee stumbles on “nearly 20,000” game assets in a storage room, leading to 7 new remasters
An EA employee discovered a storage room containing nearly 20,000 archival media assets, prompting a project that has brought seven classic games back to modern platforms. The releases show how old source material, company staff and fan expertise can combine to preserve games that might otherwise remain difficult to play.
Producer Jim Vessella organised the archive and helped digitise 6,000 assets, preserving an estimated 2,500 hours of footage. The remasters cover Wing Commander 1, 2, 3, 4, Prophecy and Privateer 2, alongside Road Rash; community modders worked on several Wing Commander titles, while GOG helped restore Prophecy. The article notes Road Rash had never previously been released digitally and required additional legal work.
In short
- EA uncovered nearly 20,000 archival media assets.
