Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer Wakes From Induced Coma, Now Faces 2 Major Surgeries

American Songwriter · 2 hours ago

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris has regained consciousness after being placed in a medically induced coma following a medical emergency that forced the band to cancel a concert during Lionel Richie's Sing a Song All Night Long Tour. Doctors briefly returned him to the coma to help stabilise his condition, and he remains in intensive care as he continues a difficult recovery, with his family and bandmates emphasising that progress has come in fits and starts rather than a straight line.

Paris's wife, Kathy Merrick, described the recovery as "a marathon" that he is fighting daily, while a spokesperson for the band said there had been both encouraging moments and new setbacks. A GoFundMe set up to cover mounting medical costs has raised more than $82,000, including a $10,000 donation, with the family thanking fans and the music community for their support. Paris still faces two major surgeries, which those close to him hope will bring him closer to returning home.
