Eating too much protein could backfire, experts warn after longevity review
A review of more than 350 studies suggests that eating more protein is not automatically healthier and may have drawbacks for longevity in some sedentary adults. The researchers say protein needs vary according to age, physical activity and overall health, challenging the assumption that high-protein diets benefit everyone.
Higher protein intake can support muscle growth and other health benefits, but consuming more than the body requires may provide little additional advantage. The review, led by researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, indicates that excess intake could be particularly unhelpful for people who are inactive.
- More protein is not always better for health
- Needs depend on age, activity and health
- Excess may harm longevity in sedentary adults
