eBay has settled a lawsuit brought by journalists Ina and David Steiner, who were subjected to a campaign of cyberstalking and harassment by eBay employees in 2019 after Ina's newsletter EcommerceBytes published critical coverage of the company. Prosecutors' evidence showed then-CEO Devin Wenig told his communications chief to "take her down", with the instruction passed to eBay's security team, who then targeted the Massachusetts-based couple with threats and disturbing deliveries to their home. The case matters because it exposed how far corporate leadership allegedly went to intimidate journalists, and it has now resulted in senior executives facing financial accountability years after only lower-level employees were initially punished.

Under the settlement, the Steiners will receive $46.15 million from eBay, $2 million from Wenig, $500,000 from former executive Wendy Jones and $50,000 from former executive Steve Wymer. eBay will also donate $6 million to various charities, while Wenig will give $1 million in Ina Steiner's name to a free-speech organisation. Seven eBay security staff had already pleaded guilty in a 2020 criminal case over the harassment, which included sending live cockroaches, a bloody pig mask and a funeral wreath to the couple's home; eBay said the 2019 conduct was "wrong, reprehensible" and does not reflect the company today.
