Echo & the Bunnymen announce Apples For Isaac, first album in 12 years

Echo & The Bunnymen have announced Apples For Isaac, their first album of new material since 2014's Meteorites, ending years of speculation about the Liverpool band's follow-up. The record has been in the works for roughly half a decade, delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and frontman Ian McCulloch's determination to get the lyrics right, and marks a significant return for a band approaching its 46th year together.
Recording began at Liverpool's Parr Street Studios, which closed in 2020, before the band relocated to Henley's Doghouse Studio to complete the LP. The album is dedicated to Blondie drummer Clem Burke, who died last year and played on nearly every track, and its lead single, "Brussels Is Haunted," draws on McCulloch's memories of the band's first overseas gig in 1980 and the death of a friend. Apples For Isaac, an 11-track record, is due out on 18 September via BMG.

Echo & the Bunnymen are a Liverpool rock band formed in 1978, best known for their atmospheric guitar sound and songs including The Killing Moon. Their original singer Ian McCulloch remains the group’s frontman, while guitarist Will Sergeant has been its other long-standing central member.
The band became prominent in Britain during the 1980s, alongside other post-punk acts, and has continued through line-up changes, breaks and reunions. Their music has combined darker, more dramatic arrangements with McCulloch’s distinctive vocals.
Clem Burke was the drummer with the American band Blondie and also worked with many other musicians during his career. His involvement links the new record to the band’s wider network of collaborators and to its Liverpool roots.
