Ed Sheeran addressed the Gaza conflict during his first concert since controversy erupted over rapper Macklemore’s removal from his US tour. Calling the devastation “catastrophic and unjustifiable”, Sheeran apologised for difficult decisions and said the dispute had placed him in a debate about freedom of speech, despite his preference to avoid political activism.

The controversy began after stadium owners objected to Macklemore shouting “free Palestine” during a performance, prompting his removal and the withdrawal of four supporting acts. Sheeran denied responsibility, but critics accused him of complicity and organised boycott calls; protesters gathered outside the Philadelphia stadium, while other fans attended to support his music. Sheeran also condemned the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel and said he had been deeply affected by civilian deaths in Gaza.
