Veteran BBC broadcaster Edward Stourton has died aged 68, the BBC announced, following a diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2014. Over a 45-year career he covered major international stories first-hand, including the Reagan era, the first Gulf War, the Siege of Sarajevo and the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, making him one of Britain's most respected journalists and broadcasters.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1957, Stourton began at ITN before becoming a founding member of Channel 4 News, later serving as its Washington Correspondent and then BBC Paris correspondent. He presented BBC One's One O'Clock News and was a longtime host of Radio 4's Today programme from 1999 until his controversial sacking in 2008, and also wrote ten books, including his final work, "Made in America," published this year to mark 250 years since the American Declaration of Independence.
