The English Football League and Scottish Professional Football League have launched investigations and are considering legal action after discovering that their matches have been illegally broadcast in Russia this season. A Russian subscription and streaming service, Football TV, has been shown airing numerous EFL fixtures and Scottish Premiership games featuring Celtic, Rangers and Hearts, despite both leagues having ceased selling broadcast rights to Russia since March 2022 in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

Football TV previously held EFL rights before 2022, while the Scottish Premiership was formerly shown on Match TV; the Premier League similarly suspended its Russian rights, held by Okko Sport. The EFL complained to Football TV last week over games including Cardiff v Wrexham and Watford v Southampton, yet the broadcaster went on to air further matches, including West Ham v Charlton and West Brom v Burnley, listed as "test events" that have raised fears Premier League content could be targeted next. Both leagues are working to identify the source of the pirated footage and stop the broadcasts, with the SPFL investigating alongside its rights distributor, Infront, and both reserving the right to pursue legal action.
