Ekko Astral have announced that they are effectively ending the band after a final show at DC9 in Washington, D.C. on 27 August, and are also shelving their new album, The Beltway is Burning. The decision matters because the Washington punk duo had built strong momentum after their debut album Pink Balloons connected with young listeners during the 2024 US election period, but that rise has now been overtaken by burnout and internal conflict.

Holzman and Hughes said the band would go on an indefinite hiatus and retire the Ekko Astral name for the foreseeable future, blaming a mix of pressure, exhaustion and disputes within the project. Their debut had led to support slots with Jeff Rosenstock and PUP, while the shelved follow-up had been produced by Jeremy Snyder and was inspired by Dr. Strangelove and 2000s comedies. The turmoil intensified after a February report said frontperson Jae Holzman had filed a peace order against former drummer Miri Tyler, with the pair saying Tyler had left the band shortly after Thanksgiving 2025.
