Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat running for the US Senate seat in Michigan, has responded after hidden YouTube videos surfaced in which he criticised the Second Amendment and questioned individual gun ownership rights. In one 2023 clip he suggested amending the constitution to replace the right to bear arms with a right to healthcare, while his campaign says he "respects the Second Amendment" and separately believes healthcare access is a right. The revelations add to scrutiny of El-Sayed, who has also faced questions over past support for defunding the police and his association with controversial online figures.

The videos, hidden but not deleted from his YouTube channel, were first reported by CNN, which found roughly 100 clips concealed before he launched his Senate campaign. In a May 2022 video, El-Sayed argued the Second Amendment applies only to a "well-regulated militia" rather than individuals, a position rejected by the US Supreme Court in the 2008 case District of Columbia v Heller. Other hidden footage reportedly shows him criticising Donald Trump's border policies, opposing fireworks, and comparing football's "ethos" to slavery; his campaign did not clarify whether his views have since changed. El-Sayed has also campaigned alongside streamer Hasan Piker, who has made controversial remarks on subjects including 9/11 and Mao Zedong.
