Elimbi Gilbert snatches PSG point to leave Manchester City WCL hopes in balance

The Guardian ·

Manchester City’s hopes of finishing in the Women’s Champions League top four took a hit as they drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain, extending their winless European start to three matches. Khadija Shaw put City ahead from the penalty spot in the 85th minute, but substitute Tara Elimbi Gilbert equalised three minutes later to earn PSG a point.

City had dominated much of the match but struggled to turn pressure into goals, with Shaw and Aoba Fujino among those going close. The draw followed earlier stalemates against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid; before kick-off, City were 11th in the table, just one place above the final qualification spot. A top-four finish would secure automatic progression to the quarter-finals.

In short

  • City remain without a Champions League win after three draws.
  • Shaw’s late penalty was cancelled out by Elimbi Gilbert.
  • City started the match 11th, one place above the qualification cut-off.
