Elon Musk Is Almost Single-Handedly Funding the Republican Midterms Push

Wired ·

Elon Musk has become the biggest known donor in the 2026 midterms, funding a large Republican turnout operation and supporting GOP candidates in key Senate races. His spending has given America PAC a role resembling a parallel party get-out-the-vote operation, underscoring the influence of one wealthy donor on the campaign.

America PAC spent $76.7 million in the third quarter, including $35.8 million on canvassing across all seven Senate battleground states and some House races. Musk also gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, with the same amount apparently directed to a Texas PAC backing Ken Paxton; America PAC had more than $12 million left and had spent money in 40 races across 17 states since July.

  • Musk is the midterms’ largest known donor.
  • America PAC spent $35.8 million on canvassing.
  • Texas Senate races drew major spending.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A major donor can support candidates and turnout efforts that reflect his political priorities, just as voters and organisations do, and his spending may help Republicans compete in closely contested races. If the activity complies with campaign-finance rules and remains subject to disclosure, it can be defended as participation in political advocacy and a way to mobilise voters.

The case against

The scale of one donor’s spending may give him unusually strong influence over which candidates and political messages receive support, raising concerns about political equality even when the spending is lawful. A donor-funded turnout operation that resembles a party’s own machinery can also blur lines of accountability and make it harder for voters to judge whose priorities are shaping the campaign.
