Elon Musk is threatening legal action against Oscar and Emmy-winning director Alex Gibney over "Musk", a nearly four-hour documentary that premiered at the Venice Film Festival, branding it a biased "hit piece" built on testimony from people with personal grievances against him. Musk's lawyer, Alex Spiro, sent a scathing pre-emptive legal letter accusing the filmmakers of relying on an "estranged parent, a former friend who broke with him publicly, and a former partner" involved in a custody dispute, and claims the production ignored repeated requests to fact-check claims before release. The row highlights ongoing tension between the billionaire and media figures scrutinising his personal and business conduct.

The letter names no one directly but clearly references Musk's estranged father Errol Musk and his ex-girlfriend Ashley St. Clair, a conservative influencer and mother of his youngest child, both reportedly featured in the film. Spiro claims Musk's team tried "multiple times" to present its side through normal fact-checking channels but was refused, and warned the filmmakers they are now on "formal legal notice". Musk also attacked Gibney directly on X, calling him a director with "zero integrity" and dismissing the documentary, which he began making in 2023, as a "hit piece that misses" and "boring for 4 hours".
