Elon Musk says X will DM you about posts that receive a Community Note
Elon Musk has announced that X will update its Community Notes feature so that any user who interacts with a post that later receives a correction will be sent a direct message alerting them to the change. The move aims to make the platform's crowd-sourced corrections harder to overlook, increasing the chance that users become aware when they have engaged with potentially misleading information.
At present, users who like, repost or reply to a post that is later corrected receive an in-app or web notification, but only after a note has been judged helpful and has been visible for 24 hours. Musk did not say when the messaging feature would launch. X adopted Community Notes as its main anti-misinformation tool in 2022, and the concept has since spread to Meta's platforms. However, a May 2026 study in Nature Communications found that notes, while effective at slowing a post's spread once applied, often arrive too late to curb the earliest and most viral phase of sharing.
- X will DM users when a post they interacted with is corrected.
- No launch date given; current alerts are in-app notifications only.
- Research suggests Community Notes often arrive too late to limit spread.
