Emmy Rossum on ‘Furious’ Serial Killer Targeting Jeffrey Epstein-Like Predators: ‘You Don’t Want to Root for Her, And Yet Maybe She’s Got a Point’

Variety · 3 hours ago

Actress Emmy Rossum has spoken about her lead role in the new Hulu crime thriller "Furious," in which she plays rookie FBI agent Alice Black hunting a female serial killer who targets wealthy predators resembling Jeffrey Epstein. Rossum described the character's moral complexity, saying audiences will feel torn between not wanting to root for a killer and recognising she may have a point, reflecting the eight-episode series' dark tone and its echoes of real-world headlines about abuse and impunity among the powerful.

In an interview timed to the show's first three episodes streaming, Rossum also revealed a personal detail behind one emotionally intense scene, in which her character confronts her abusive ex-boyfriend's dying mother. She recalled meeting her own estranged grandmother for the only time on her deathbed years earlier while filming "Shameless," an experience that inspired a specific costume detail in the scene and which left her so affected during filming that director Karina Evans and castmates had to comfort her afterwards. The series also stars Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy and Quincy Tyler Bernstine.
