England prospect Perrin ‘has the shots’ on return

BBC Sport ·

England prospect Davina Perrin marked her return from injury with a half-century for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, saying the innings reminded her that she still has the attacking ability that made her one of the game’s most promising young batters. Although Phoenix lost by 24 runs to Southern Brave, her performance is significant as she rebuilds form and confidence after her first substantial injury lay-off.

The 19-year-old made 52 from 43 balls, including five fours, in only her second match back after a month out; she was dropped three times before being dismissed. Perrin set the women’s Hundred record for the fastest century last season, scoring 101 from 43 balls for Northern Superchargers, and joined Phoenix for £50,000 after becoming the first player selected in March’s inaugural auction. She said advice from former England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor—focusing on the player she is now rather than before injury—helped her play fearlessly.

  • Perrin scored 52 on her return from injury.
  • Phoenix lost by 24 runs to Southern Brave.
  • Sarah Taylor’s advice helped restore her confidence.

Davina Perrin is a 19-year-old English cricketer identified as one of the game's most promising young talents. She gained particular recognition last season when she set a record in The Hundred, a professional cricket competition, by scoring 100 runs faster than any other woman in the tournament's history.

For developing players in professional cricket, returning to competition after injury and rebuilding confidence is a significant step. Perrin recently resumed playing after a month out with injury, her first substantial time away from the sport.

She currently plays for Birmingham Phoenix, whom she joined this year as the first player selected in a new auction system. Her recent performance is significant as it demonstrates she has retained the attacking ability that first made her stand out.
