Entertainment Hits $332.B To Become World’s Second Most Valuable Sector As Netflix, YouTube & Spotify Fly – Interbrand Report

Deadline ·

Interbrand’s latest Best Global Brands report values the entertainment sector at $332.5 billion, up 12.4% year on year, making it the world’s second-largest business sector after overtaking automotive. The rise comes amid layoffs and budget cuts in Hollywood, and suggests that entertainment brands are gaining value as they expand their influence beyond content.

Netflix’s brand value increased 22%, which Interbrand links to its moves into live entertainment, sport and advertising. YouTube ranked tenth globally and Instagram seventh; Netflix was 23rd, Disney 23rd, Sony 35th and Spotify 39th. Interbrand says entertainment companies are increasingly shaping consumer behaviour, while its ranking also reflects financial performance, international revenue and long-term profit prospects.

In short

  • Entertainment brands reached $332.5 billion in value.
  • The sector rose 12.4% to overtake automotive.
  • Netflix’s brand value grew 22%.

Explained simply

Interbrand is a brand consultancy that estimates the value of major global brands, using factors including financial performance, international reach and prospects for future profit. Its annual ranking compares companies across industries, so it can show how their brands are valued relative to one another.

Entertainment companies now span more than film and television: platforms such as Netflix, YouTube and Spotify also compete for people’s time, subscriptions and advertising. Their services reach audiences around the world, giving their brands influence over how people watch, listen and spend.

The sector’s reported growth comes as parts of Hollywood face job cuts and tighter budgets. Brand value is an estimate of a company’s brand strength and commercial prospects, so it does not by itself describe the financial health of every entertainment business or the number of jobs in the industry.
