Epic Reveals Drop Rate for Fortnite’s Pirate Token Following Pressure From Fans
Epic Games has published the odds of finding Fortnite’s Pirate Shop Access Token, after players criticised the lack of information and some threatened a boycott or tried to report the company to the US Federal Trade Commission. The token unlocks the Pirate Shop, where nearly every item is free for 14 days, making the rare chest drop especially sought after.
During most hours, the chance of finding the token in a chest is 1 in 137,000, far lower than some players had guessed. Epic also said drop rates can rise during scheduled Treasure Hours and may be boosted further in future; players welcomed the disclosure, while some said it should have come sooner.
In short
- Epic disclosed the Pirate Token’s drop rate after player backlash.
- The usual chance is 1 in 137,000 per chest.
- Rates may increase during Treasure Hours.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Publishing the odds gives players information they need to make an informed choice about how much time to spend pursuing the token, and the disclosure followed sustained player concern. Because Treasure Hours can raise the chance and the shop’s items are free once unlocked, Epic may also argue that the system offers a time-limited bonus rather than requiring players to buy access.
The case against
Players can reasonably argue that the odds should have been clear from the outset, especially when a 1-in-137,000 chance makes the token far rarer than many had assumed. Disclosing the rate only after criticism may leave players feeling they lacked information when deciding whether to spend time chasing it, and future boosts do not remove that concern about transparency.
