Erik ten Hag accuses Cristiano Ronaldo of ‘letting down’ Manchester United

The Guardian ·

Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo let Manchester United’s team down during their time together, as the former manager revisits their breakdown at the club. He also claims United’s owners failed to honour promises of loyalty, support and communication, adding to his sense of disappointment before his dismissal.

Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham in October 2022 and later criticised the club publicly; his contract was ended by mutual agreement the following month. Ten Hag says Ronaldo did not complete a team run after United lost 4-0 to Brentford. Ten Hag was sacked in October 2024, five months after winning the FA Cup and signing an extension, and says he had objected to Scott McTominay’s sale to Napoli.
