Estúdios Globo to Produce Feature ‘Macacos,’ Based on Clayton Nascimento’s Play (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 2 hours ago

Brazilian media giant Globo's production arm, Estúdios Globo, is developing a feature film adaptation of "Macacos" ("Monkeys"), based on Clayton Nascimento's acclaimed one-man play, as part of the company's expanding Brazilian film slate. The project is notable both for tackling a difficult format shift, translating a monologue into a full screenplay, and for its subject matter: it dramatises the real case of Eduardo de Jesus Ferreira, a ten-year-old boy fatally shot by police in Rio de Janeiro's Complexo do Alemão favela in 2015, and his mother's long fight for justice.

The film is currently in development and is expected to begin shooting in 2027, with Nascimento serving as a consultant on Mariana Jaspe's screenplay under Jaqueline Souza's supervision. The play's exposure reportedly helped reopen the stalled police investigation, leading Rio prosecutors to formally charge two officers with aggravated homicide in June 2026. Alongside "Macacos," Estúdios Globo also announced the telefilm "Os Tatuyos," a romantic comedy about a Rio surfer who falls for an Indigenous woman, due to film later in 2026 and air on one of Globo's platforms.
