EU prosecutor office investigates fatal train crash in Spain
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into possible fraud involving EU funds for upgrading safety, signalling and communications on Spain’s Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line. The probe follows a crash in Urda that killed at least 69 people, bringing renewed scrutiny to rail safety and maintenance.
On Friday, investigators visited Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, its rail safety agency and the Court of Auditors. Adif confirmed it provided requested information. The Urda crash on 28 October was Spain’s second fatal train crash this year; a January crash near Adamuz killed 46, and a separate EU funds investigation into track maintenance has produced no public updates. Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Adif’s president have resigned.
