European football leaders have reportedly agreed to boycott FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, if FIFA president Gianni Infantino continues plans to sell stakes in the competition to private investors. The move would be unprecedented and could threaten the proposal’s viability, as a World Cup without Europe’s strongest national sides would lose significant sporting and commercial appeal.

The reported decision was made during an emergency virtual meeting of UEFA’s 55 member associations, chaired by Aleksander Čeferin. FIFA has asked its 211 member associations to back the commercial plan by 19 September, reportedly offering financial incentives, while Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman has also questioned whether members were adequately consulted.
