Christopher Nolan's forthcoming adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" has attracted controversy for months ahead of its cinema release, with criticism ranging from casting choices and historical accuracy to remarks by the director dismissing his critics. The film, an epic fantasy action-adventure, has become a lightning rod for debate even before audiences have had the chance to see it, adding pressure to what is already one of the most costly R-rated productions ever made.

The production carries a budget of around $250 million (£197 million), with a further estimated $125 million (£98 million) spent on marketing. Analysts believe the film will need to gross more than $700 million (£551 million) worldwide simply to break even. Its cast includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron, with Nolan, 55, directing.
