Everything Everything fight modern life on new album ‘Poison Pop’: “It’s about this drink that kills you, but you still want it”
Everything Everything have released “Poison Pop”, an album that turns from the abstract approach of 2024’s “Mountainhead” towards faster, punk-leaning songs about modern life. Frontman Jonathan Higgs says the band wanted a more direct, confrontational record that reflects the uncertainty and conflicting opinions around them.
The songs address social media’s addictive pull, online rage-bait and AI-generated “slop”. The band wrote the album while touring to mark 10 years of “Get To Heaven”, which helped reconnect them with their earlier, more aggressive sound. Higgs says they rejected around 80 or 90 songs before narrowing the choices to about 20, then asked their bandmates to select the final tracks.
In short
- Everything Everything’s new album takes a faster, more direct approach.
- “Poison Pop” explores social media, online rage and AI-generated art.
- The band rejected around 80 or 90 songs during its creation.
Explained simply
Everything Everything are a British band whose music combines rock with electronic sounds and often explores life in the modern world. Their 2015 album Get To Heaven had a sharper, more forceful sound, while later records took a more abstract approach.
The new songs draw on everyday experiences of being online, including the pull of social media, angry posts designed to provoke reactions and material made by artificial intelligence. These subjects matter because digital platforms shape how people spend their time and encounter information, while also raising questions about attention and trust.
The band wrote the album while touring to mark a decade since Get To Heaven. Revisiting that earlier music helped them return to a more direct style, and they narrowed a large batch of songs down with input from their bandmates.
