Ex Dragon Age boss warns devs against listening to player feedback for solutions: “They’re not developers”

GamesRadar+ · 2 weeks ago

Former Dragon Age producer Mark Darrah has advised game developers to treat player feedback as evidence of problems rather than as ready-made instructions for fixing them. He argues that players are highly effective at identifying frustration, confusion and perceived imbalance, but may not understand the technical or design causes behind those experiences.

Darrah said large player communities contain competing groups, and the most vocal contributors may not represent the wider audience. He recommended combining community feedback with playtesting, in-game telemetry and market data; for example, calls for smarter enemy AI might instead point to balance, pathfinding or pacing problems.

  • Players identify problems well, not always solutions.
  • Vocal fans may not reflect most players.
  • Developers should combine feedback with wider data.
