Explosions were heard overnight in Addis Ababa, including near military headquarters in the west and a secret service base in the south, residents and diplomatic sources said. The reports come amid heightened concern for the capital’s security, a week after fighting broke out in northern Ethiopia between the army and an alliance of armed groups.

The blasts occurred hours after drone flights were banned over the city. A source linked to opposition fighters told Reuters they were responsible for what they described as drone strikes, but officials have not confirmed the cause, locations, damage or any casualties. One resident estimated an explosion in Gotera at about 00:30 local time.
