Formula 1 will reduce the maximum distance of grands prix by 15km, from 305km to 290km, from the 2027 season. New rules will also replace the current three-hour limit for rain- or incident-disrupted races with a race-specific “hard stop time”, aiming to give events a better chance of being completed while considering local daylight and night-time conditions.

The changes reflect a shift towards greater reliance on combustion-engine power, which will increase fuel use and could leave teams with existing fuel tanks unable to finish races if they carry over current chassis designs. The F1 Commission also agreed to allow practice sessions to be extended when interrupted by red flags, while 2027 will feature 10 sprint races, including one at Monaco.
