Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt has formally asked Fifa president Gianni Infantino to release documents concerning his abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise World Cup sell-off plan and the controversial lifting of USA striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension. She is also seeking an independent review, increasing pressure on Infantino ahead of a Fifa council meeting and next year’s presidential election.

The letter was sent before the 15 October council meeting, the first since Infantino withdrew the FFE proposal in August. Balogun’s red-card ban was lifted after Infantino received a call from Donald Trump, allowing the striker to face Belgium, while Fifa has not published the ethics committee’s written reasoning or answered a Belgian FA request for an explanation. Hewitt’s stance could affect England’s bid to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup, despite the FA previously endorsing Infantino’s re-election before withdrawing its support.
