Fairphone’s latest repairable earbuds are smaller, lighter, and longer-lasting

The Verge ·

Fairphone has launched the Fairbuds 2, a redesigned pair of repairable wireless earbuds with improved sound and nearly twice the battery life of the original. They are available in the UK and Europe from £99, with a US launch planned for 2 November at $119.

The case is 37 per cent smaller, while total battery life reaches 40 hours without noise cancellation; the earbuds last up to eight hours, or six with ANC enabled. Features include LDAC support, multipoint connectivity and app-based equalisation. Each earbud’s battery can be removed without tools, and seven parts are user-replaceable; Fairphone says 49 per cent of materials are fair or recycled.

Fairphone is a Dutch electronics company known for making devices that are designed to be repaired, with replacement parts available to users. Wireless earbuds are usually difficult to fix because their small batteries and components are sealed inside.

Repairability can extend a product’s useful life and reduce the need to replace it when a part wears out. Fairphone says its earbuds use some recycled or fairly sourced materials, while features such as noise cancellation and wireless audio formats affect how they sound and how long they run between charges.
