A family from Manchester are demanding answers after their healthy Goldendoodle, Poppy, died of heat stroke shortly after being dropped off at a boarding business in Cottingham, Yorkshire, during a heatwave. Georgia and Tom Baxter say they were assured the dogs would be kept cool with fans and sprinklers, but Poppy was left unsupervised for almost four hours before being found dead and rushed to a vet, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The case has drawn attention to the risks of unsupervised pet boarding during hot weather and raised questions about the standards and oversight of licensed animal care businesses.

Poppy, aged two, died on 19 June after temperatures reached around 30C; a vet report cited excessive hyperthermia, with her rectal temperature beyond the range of the thermometer used. The Baxters say staff at Tailz 'N' Trailz showed little sympathy, called their post-mortem request "inconvenient", and suggested they store their dog's body in their home fridge. East Riding of Yorkshire Council investigated and, while unable to confirm the concerns caused Poppy's death, downgraded the business from a five-star to a two-star rating, subjecting it to more frequent inspections; the family say this response falls short of what they expected.
