Far-left activist known to police is arrested over arson attack that destroyed historic town hall during French riots
A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fire that destroyed much of Limoges’s historic town hall during protests in France. Anti-terrorism police are investigating whether the suspected arson was organised by ultra-left activists, while the arrest raises questions about security and the future of the listed building.
The town hall dates from 1883; its roof and belfry collapsed, and its interior was destroyed, although the facade remains at risk of collapse. Authorities said around 5,000 people attended the Limoges demonstration on Saturday, including 700 described as radicalised and extremely violent; some 7,000 joined a protest against the violence the following evening. The protests were called over grievances including the cost of living and school conditions.
