A parliamentary standards inquiry into Nigel Farage resumed on 14 August after he was returned as MP for Clacton in a by-election. The inquiry concerns an alleged failure to register an interest under the House of Commons rules; it had been opened on 13 May and suspended when Farage left Parliament in July. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards makes clear that an investigation is not itself a finding that rules were broken. Reporting said the case related to a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency entrepreneur Christopher Harborne, which Farage denies involved wrongdoing.

On the same day in Sydney, fallen overhead wires affected a South Coast Line train between Redfern and Erskineville at about 4.30pm, interrupting services across parts of the rail network. Power was isolated while passengers from the affected service and two nearby stopped trains were escorted off. Hundreds of passengers were assisted from trains, with the final evacuations completed by around 8pm, and substantial delays continued into the evening as Sydney Trains worked to remove trains and repair the affected section. The cause of the incident was under investigation.

  • Farage's parliamentary standards inquiry resumed after his Clacton by-election victory.
  • The inquiry alleges a failure to register an interest; no breach had been determined.
