Fearnley among Britons closing in on US Open place
Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Harry Wendelken and Harriet Dart are each one win from reaching the US Open main draw after winning their second-round qualifying matches in New York. Their progress matters because it could increase British representation at the season’s final Grand Slam, with several players seeking either a first appearance or a return to the main draw.
Fearnley beat Luka Pavlovic 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 and will face Jurij Rodionov, while Samuel came back to defeat Billy Harris and next plays Cristian Garin. Wendelken saved a match point in a three-hour win over Remy Bertola, and Dart recovered from a set down to beat 16-year-old Kristina Penickova 5-7 6-0 6-3; Fran Jones and Katie Swan were also due to play, but Jack Pinnington Jones was eliminated.
