An Indian national, Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari, has been federally indicted in Minnesota on two counts alleging that he falsely claimed to be a US citizen in order to register and vote in the 2024 general election. The case has renewed partisan debate about the extent of voter fraud, with conservative critics citing it as evidence that such offences occur, while state officials say ineligible voting is extremely rare.

According to investigators, Chaudhari signed a required voter certificate and voted on 5 November 2024 after apparently receiving registration information linked to his driving licence. He initially denied voting but later told authorities he had made a mistake and acknowledged that he was not a citizen; he said he only learned voting was prohibited when advised by his lawyer during the green-card process. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison for each count, while the Justice Department says it has indicted or convicted 67 people for election-related crimes.
