Feds crack down on stolen car pipeline to Mexican cartels as 13 charged in border scheme

Fox News ·

Federal authorities say a cross-border network moved stolen cars and trucks through El Paso into Mexico, allegedly supplying cartels with vehicles for their operations. Thirteen people have been charged, and prosecutors say the case shows how vehicle theft can support wider criminal activity.

Investigators recovered 29 vehicles valued at about $1.14 million, including an armoured SUV and pickup. Of the 13 defendants, 11 are US citizens and two are Mexican citizens; all face charges of transporting stolen property across state lines, which carry a potential sentence of up to 10 years if convicted. The allegations have not been proven, and the defendants are presumed innocent.
