Explained simply

The Latin Grammy Awards are an annual ceremony run by the Latin Recording Academy, recognising recordings made in Spanish and Portuguese across many musical styles. The awards include live performances as well as prizes, most of which are presented at a separate event before the televised ceremony.

José Alfredo Jiménez was a Mexican songwriter and singer associated with ranchero music, a traditional style often linked to rural life and mariachi. His songs, including “El Rey”, have been recorded by many performers and remain part of the genre’s repertoire.

The awards’ centenary celebrations refer to the 100th anniversary of Jiménez’s birth in 1926. Edgar Barrera, a songwriter and producer known for work in Latin music, is involved in producing the tribute.
