Prison officer’s secret six-month affair with inmate involved 5,000 messages

Prison officer Jade Morris had a secret six-month relationship with inmate Jerome Nunes at HMP Long Lartin, a category A prison, a court heard at her sentencing. She exchanged more than 5,000 messages with him and sent sexually explicit images, breaching the trust and boundaries expected of staff working in a maximum security jail.

The contact ran from July 2022 to January 2023 and took place through Snapchat and WhatsApp, using multiple numbers and fake names. The relationship came to light after Nunes threw a phone from his cell during a search; police recovered the device and messages. Morris admitted misconduct in public office and encouraging Nunes to use an illegal phone. Nunes, serving 12 years for conspiracy to supply cocaine, pleaded guilty to possessing and using an unauthorised mobile phone.
