Former Kentucky teacher pleads guilty over explicit messages to pupil

Daily Mail ·

A 29-year-old former Kentucky teacher, Rachel Clement, has pleaded guilty to three charges after being accused of sending explicit messages to a 14-year-old pupil. Under the reported plea deal, she is barred from teaching in the United States, must register as a sex offender and may not contact the pupil.

Prosecutors amended the charges to two counts of first-degree sexual abuse involving a position of trust and one count of tampering with evidence; an earlier sexual abuse charge was dropped. The prosecutor recommended concurrent prison terms of three years for each abuse charge and five years for evidence tampering, but the judge will decide the sentence. Clement is due to be sentenced on 4 January.

In short

  • Former teacher Rachel Clement pleaded guilty to three charges.
  • The reported deal bars her from teaching and requires sex offender registration.
  • A judge will decide her sentence on 4 January.

Explained simply

Teachers are responsible for pupils’ safety and are expected to maintain professional boundaries. In Kentucky, as in other US states, laws can treat sexual conduct by someone in a position of trust with a child as a serious offence.

Rachel Clement is a former teacher, and the pupil involved was 14. The case concerns alleged explicit messages between them and also an accusation that evidence was tampered with; the charges and possible penalties are matters for the court.
