Fico downplays possible Slovak-hosted Ukraine peace talks during visit to Lviv
Robert Fico said Slovakia could host technical-level peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, but stressed that the right conditions were needed and that his country was too small to organise a meeting likely to achieve meaningful results. His comments in Lviv appeared to temper a proposal by Slovakia’s foreign minister to hold preparatory talks in Bratislava, as the US pursues a diplomatic resolution to the war.
During the visit, Fico and Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi agreed to deepen cooperation in education, energy and the economy. Slovakia pledged €500,000 for energy support, including 54 generators, another €500,000 for shelters and medical equipment, and three electric locomotives; agreements also covered two bilingual schools and border infrastructure. Fico criticised the EU’s approach to peace and has opposed Slovak army arms donations to Ukraine, while Slovakia has maintained arms sales and some non-lethal support.
In short
- Fico says Slovakia is ready to host technical peace talks under the right conditions.
- He doubts Slovakia could organise talks with meaningful results.
- Slovakia pledged funding, generators and locomotives to Ukraine.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Slovakia could offer a practical, relatively neutral venue for technical talks, helping keep diplomatic channels open while larger powers pursue a settlement. Even if it cannot broker a final agreement, preparatory discussions could clarify issues and support a process that reduces the risk of further bloodshed.
The case against
Hosting talks without the right conditions or influence could lend them a sense of progress without bringing the parties closer to a viable settlement. Fico’s caution reflects the view that a small host should not overstate what it can achieve, and that talks are useful only if Ukraine and Russia are ready for substantive engagement.
