Fifth unvaccinated person dies of measles; CDC still not counting all deaths
Pennsylvania has reported its fifth measles death, all among unvaccinated people, as an outbreak centred in Lancaster County continues. The deaths add to a resurgence of a disease declared eliminated in the US in 2000, amid falling vaccination rates.
The outbreak has reached 943 cases across 39 Pennsylvania counties, with 119 reported in the latest week and at least 176 people hospitalised. Lancaster County has recorded 381 cases and three deaths; the five deaths are the only ones reported in the US this year, while the CDC is counting two. State nurses have administered more than 8,500 MMR vaccine doses this year, including over 5,500 at pop-up clinics.
