Final Fantasy 14 could finally introduce a controversial feature

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed that Square Enix is exploring ways to let new players skip ahead in the MMORPG's story, a significant reversal for a game that has long insisted players work through its entire narrative before accessing current content. This matters because the game now requires hundreds of hours to complete its main story alone, making it an increasingly daunting prospect for newcomers, and any move to streamline that path would mark a major shift in how Square Enix balances storytelling with accessibility.

Speaking at a media Q&A during Final Fantasy Fan Fest in Berlin, Yoshida said the team is considering two potential solutions, though he gave few specifics. One is expected to arrive before or alongside the release of the next expansion, Evercold, in January, while the second, more ambitious system is still being assessed for feasibility, with a "non-zero possibility" of it landing in patch 8.0. Evercold begins a new story arc, the Godless Realms Saga, following on from 2021's Endwalker, making it a natural entry point for new players, though some in the community worry that letting people skip content could leave them without the tutorials needed to play well alongside others. Yoshida hinted that further details may be shared at Tokyo Fan Fest in October.

  • Square Enix may add a way to skip FF14's lengthy story for new players
  • Producer Yoshida is weighing two undisclosed solutions, one tied to Evercold
  • Community split over risk of undertrained players joining group content
