Final Fantasy 6 Remake Would Have to Be ‘4 or 5’ Games, Suggests Series Producer

Push Square · 4 hours ago

At a Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival panel this past weekend, series producers Naoki Yoshida and Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the long-mooted idea of remaking Final Fantasy 6, with Yoshida suggesting that, given the game's scale, a faithful remake would likely need to be split across four or five separate instalments. Neither producer confirmed any such project is actually in development, but the remarks feed into an ongoing debate among fans about whether classic Final Fantasy titles should be remade as multi-part epics, following the model set by the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

Yoshida, who directs Final Fantasy 14 and produced Final Fantasy 16, argued that Final Fantasy 6's scope is even larger than Final Fantasy 7's, and that similar logic would apply to other frequently requested remakes such as Final Fantasy 8 and 9. This echoes comments made in 2024 by veteran developer Yoshinori Kitase, who estimated a modern Final Fantasy 6 remake would take 20 years to make. Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, separately praised his team for staying together over ten years across three games remaking a single original title, underlining just how resource-intensive such projects are.
