Final Fantasy XIV Evercold release date delayed until February
Square Enix has delayed Final Fantasy XIV’s Evercold expansion by three weeks to give the team more time to ensure its quality. Producer Naoki Yoshida said the core features were on track, but the original schedule would have left little room to deliver on the promises made for the expansion.
Early access now begins on 19 February, with the full launch on 23 February; pre-orders open on 4 November. Evercold adds less linear main-story progression, level-scaling adjustments for group duties, weekly rather than daily progression, and the new Evolved battle style, which is still being refined. Early access requires an active subscription, a pre-order and registration of the pre-order bonus code.
In short
- Evercold has been delayed by three weeks.
- Early access starts on 19 February; full launch is 23 February.
- Square Enix says the extra time will help ensure quality.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The delay gives the developers more time to refine the expansion, particularly its new Evolved battle style, and may help ensure the finished game lives up to what players were promised. A short postponement can be a reasonable trade-off if it improves quality and avoids launching features that feel unfinished.
The case against
Players who planned around the announced schedule may find the three-week delay frustrating, especially if they have arranged time off or other plans for early access. They could reasonably argue that a release date is a commitment, and that the delay disrupts those plans without guaranteeing that the expansion will meet expectations.
