Finn Wolfhard shares update on The Replacements biopic he’s been working on with his dad

NME ·

Finn Wolfhard says the planned biopic of influential Minnesota post-punk band The Replacements has been sent to its director and that he hopes production can begin soon. The Stranger Things actor is developing the screenplay with his father, Rich, and producer Rich Peete, adapting Bob Mehr’s biography Trouble Boys: The True Story Of The Replacements.

Wolfhard said the band is personally important to him and that he wants the film to take a “weirder” approach, rather than emulate the polished style of Bohemian Rhapsody. Alongside acting and music, he recently co-directed Hell Of A Summer, produced and starred in Crash Land, and discussed a failed audition to play George Harrison in Sam Mendes’ forthcoming Beatles films.

In short

  • Wolfhard says The Replacements biopic has been sent to its director.
  • He is adapting Bob Mehr’s bestselling band biography.
  • He wants a stranger, less conventional music-biopic style.

Explained simply

The Replacements are a post-punk band from Minneapolis that formed in the 1980s and became influential in American rock music. Known for their energetic live performances and raw sound, they left a lasting impact on the alternative rock scene.

A film biography of the band is in development, with Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard working on the screenplay alongside his father Rich and producer Rich Peete. The project adapts Bob Mehr's biography Trouble Boys: The True Story Of The Replacements.

Wolfhard has indicated he wants the film to take a distinctive approach, aiming for something "weirder" rather than following the polished style of recent music biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody. The band holds personal significance for him, making this a project he is invested in bringing to the screen.
