Fire crews spent several hours tackling a large blaze in a cornfield at Nether Haugh, near Rawmarsh in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Sunday. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (SYFRS) sent five fire engines to the scene, where a field of cut corn and a hedgerow caught fire, with evidence of fly-tipping also discovered at the site. The blaze comes amid ongoing dry, hot weather, prompting the service to warn that conditions remain unsuitable for open flames.

The cause of the fire on Back Lane has not yet been established. SYFRS urged the public to leave barbecues at home and avoid garden bonfires while the current conditions persist, and asked people to take rubbish away with them and dispose of cigarettes carefully. It follows a separate large fire at an industrial estate in Doncaster the previous day, which the service also responded to.
